Headquartered in Bologna, the company operates modern facilities for processing, packing, and distribution, including a state-of-the-art plant opened in Molinella in 2013.
Romagnoli’s potatoes come from the areas most suited to premium production and are grown, harvested, processed, and marketed according to high quality standards. The company’s product portfolio is one of the most comprehensive in the market: certified seed potatoes, fresh potatoes, ready-to-eat potatoes: IV and V range for supermarket delis, collective and school catering. Romagnoli’s potatoes are distributed nationwide through Italy’s main retail chains, under well-known labels such as èVita, the Selenella brand, and Patata di Bologna P.D.O..
In addition, Romagnoli offers a wide range of onions and other fresh fruit and vegetables such as carrots, cultivated in close cooperation with experienced farming partners. The company also provides agronomic consulting and technical support to growers across the country, helping to enhance efficiency and quality throughout the supply chain.
A long family business history
The origins of Romagnoli date back to the late 1920s, when Natale Romagnoli returned from the United States to invest in his family’s farm in the Apennines near Bologna. Thanks to his openness to new potato varieties from Northern Europe and his pioneering vision, the company soon built a wide commercial network across Italy.
In the 1950s, Giuseppe Romagnoli moved the headquarters to Bologna, consolidating its expansion both nationally and internationally. During the 1960s and 70s, the company introduced the Primura variety, which became an icon of Bologna’s potato production and later achieved PDO recognition in 2010.
Romagnoli was also instrumental in founding important sector bodies, including the Bologna Potato Exchange in 1977, the Consorzio per la patata tipica di Bologna, the Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità (Selenella), and the Consorzio di Tutela Patata di Bologna D.O.P.
Today, more than 60 years after its official establishment in 1960, the company remains family-run under Giulio and Grazia Romagnoli, carrying forward a passion for potatoes that combines tradition and innovation.
Mission and values
Romagnoli’s mission is to integrate tradition and innovation across the entire potato chain, from varietal research to storage, processing and distribution. Working closely with world leaders in seed potato breeding, the company seeks and tests new varieties adapted to Italian soils and climates, promoting both quality and sustainability.
Its values emphasise respect for local products, the promotion of high standards, and the adoption of innovative techniques that safeguard consumer health and the environment. Ethical principles, social inclusion, and food safety culture guide its daily operations.
Long-term partnerships and trust-based agreements with farmers are at the heart of Romagnoli’s strategy, ensuring the continuous development of the Italian potato chain and the enhancement of its most iconic products.
